ESPR Compliance
Durability, repairability, recyclability, recycled-content and Digital Product Passport requirements for physical products, components and materials.
Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation
ESPR makes sustainable product design a legal requirement across almost all physical products placed on the EU market. It shifts the question from whether a product works today to whether it is durable, repairable, recyclable and supported by credible lifecycle data.
Whole vehicles are carved out only for aspects already covered by vehicle type-approval law. Components, materials, tyres, e-bikes, e-scooters and product aspects outside type approval can still fall into ESPR through delegated acts.
The Digital Product Passport is the data backbone. The QR code is the visible part; the difficult work is assembling accurate, machine-readable value-chain data before the product reaches the market.
Where This Reaches the Supply Chain
Steel, aluminium, tyre, plastics and material suppliers
Component and intermediate-product manufacturers
E-bike, e-scooter and non-car mobility product teams
Product, sustainability and supplier-data teams preparing DPP evidence
Regulatory Timing to Watch
18 Jul 2024
ESPR enters into force and replaces the old Ecodesign Directive.
16 Apr 2025
First working-plan priorities set, including steel, tyres and other automotive-adjacent groups.
2026-2029
Delegated acts for priority groups phase in, with first compliance windows around 2028-2029.
18 Feb 2027
Battery Passport goes live for EV/LMT batteries, signalling the DPP workload.
What Manufacturers Need to Prepare
Product and component scope review against delegated-act priority groups
Material, recycled-content, carbon-footprint and repairability data collection
Digital Product Passport and conformity documentation readiness
A Practical Route to Readiness
Assess
Map products, components and materials that may fall under ESPR.
Build
Stand up material, footprint and supplier data collection.
Embed
Make DPP and ecodesign evidence part of product launch.
How We Support This Framework
- ESPR scope and delegated-act tracking
- Digital Product Passport readiness
- Conformity documentation and sustainability data programme planning
